SERUM CALCIUM LEVELS AND BLOOD PH

We know, normal serum calcium level is 9-11Meq/dl. It is maintained by the combined action of calcitonin and parathormone, hormones from thyroid and parathyroid respectively.

                                    Normal blood pH is
7.35-7.45.It is controlled by the buffering systems of the body in which  H+ and  HCO3-  [bicarbonate]ions are playing a key role .Elevated H+level causes acidosis whereas bicarbonate leads to alkalosis.

Calcium in blood combines with bicarbonate ion.So when there is hypercalcemia, the binding with bicarbonate will be high, resulting in metabolic acidosis.Similarly in hypocalcemia, metabolic alkalosis also may occur. So when we are treating for abnormal serum calcium levels ,it is important that we should have an eye on the acid-base status of the body too.

Thank you very much....
